San Miguel de Allende

FELIZ ANO NUEVO!!!! 2019

January 2, 2019

2am!!! That is when we were walking home from the most amazing New Years Eve celebration ever!! Would we do this in Oakland? No Way!! But the streets here were filled with people in high spirits after an evening of good cheer, music and fireworks. Once again, the Jardin had a police presence but it was mellow and unobtrusive. There were no fights, instead there were families, couples and groups of Mexicans and Expats ringing in the New Year and having an all around good time. The Jardin was packed as everyone was listening to a huge orchestra and some great singers. Oldies but goodies were being broadcasted across the square with everyone joining in the sing along. It was a lot of fun!! As the hour struck the Parroquia became a sound and light display that was quite marvelous. And afterwards the sky exploded with truly fabulous fireworks. San Miguel de Allende knows how to do New Years Eve right!!!

We had started the evening at our friend’s Phyllis and Kim’s new home in Colonia Ojo de Agua. What a beautiful place. Very Moroccan, Indian style which we love. We had a lovely fajita dinner with a couple of bottles of wine, finishing with Tres Leches cake and Limoncello. And after the fireworks we returned to hang out on their terrace, enjoy the view and pop open a bubbly. It was both a great finale to a wonderful year and a great start to a year full of promise and adventure.

2018 has been a year of blessings. We had a relatively smooth house sale and move to our amazing new home town. Enjoyed our first anniversary. Met some tremendous new friends and enjoyed visits from some of our friends still north of the border. We have lived in two great houses and have found out that our budget is holding in there better than we expected. We took trips to Puerto Vallarta, Bucerias, Sayulita and Mexico City. We enjoyed all of what San Miguel de Allende has to offer including tons of music and arts events. We are healthier and happier than ever!! And life is looking grand!!

This year we are heading to the Yucatan for two months starting in February and are really looking forward to seeing more of Mexico. And getting into some warmer weather since San Miguel has been cold and I am a warm weather gal. We also are making a trip up to the Bay Area to finish up some house sale taxes and visit with family and friends. It will be almost a year since we have seen them so that will be fun.

I am expecting some culture shock though as we descend back into massive traffic. There are no traffic lights or stops in San Miguel and we walk everywhere. In the Bay Area we will have a lot of ground to cover.  And since the atmosphere of San Miguel is so mello I am not looking forward to the frantic mentality of the USA.

When we get back in April we will be getting our new 3 year Temporary Resident card. Once again we will turn to Sonia Diaz to help us with that. It will be strange to think we will have then been here a whole year. It has gone so fast and has been such an amazing experience. Our best decision ever!!!!

Our New Years resolution is for both of us to get better with our Spanish!! Our Spanish education was sporadic last year and we are hoping to find classes that are a bit more solid that we can count on when we return.

We have enjoyed sharing our Mexican adventure on this blog and hope that our readers have had fun coming along for the ride. What will 2019 bring?

Wishing everyone a wonderful 2019 filled with joy, health and happiness!!
