Roaming Around Mexico, San Miguel de Allende

We Are Taking On Travel – Will It Work?

January 5, 2022

It is Monday, January third, and I am looking over our terrace and down the hill to the Parroquia. Oh, we will so miss this view. But we have packed up all our belongings and sent them off to storage for three months. It is time to leave San Miguel and venture off for a while. And when we return home, it will be to a beautiful rental house just a few blocks from here, also with a view.

Tonight, or rather at 3 am tomorrow, we take off and fly to Tijuana, then cross to San Diego. It is time for COVID tests and boosters.

We are going to see friends, stay at their house. That makes going back to the USA easier for me. We want to be protected. Everyone should. But that is a whole debate I will not get into.

With things the way they are in the COVID world, we are traveling with some trepidation. I think everyone is. A bit of a worry, with so many flights being canceled. Will this whole itinerary work out? What will traveling for three months be like? We are bringing you along.

We will do our part to remain healthy and protect others. Having those three shots will help. And masks, they will become a sign of what years we took our photos.

From Tijuana, we head south on a red-eye to Cancun and then catch an ADO bus to the very cool Isla Holbox and the beach. Our full itinerary – Isla Holbox, Puerto Morelos*, Bacalar, Valladolid, Cozumel*, Puerto Escondido (Zicatela)*, San Agustinillo*, Puerto Ángel*, Oaxaca City*, San Cristobal* and then a few days on Isla Mujeres* before catching a Cancun – Leon and returning to San Miguel. (those with stars are new to us).

We can’t wait for the smell and feel of humidity – that first hit as we get off the plane. That knowing we are somewhere new. Then a plunk down on the sand. AH.

I am treating our months away as a retreat. We have been busy, and I have been neglecting my writing and have assignments from my memoir coach to dive into.

We are planning to only travel around Mexico this year. After we return to San Miguel in April, we want to take a week each month to go somewhere new to us. There are so many places to consider.

We have been busy in San Miguel. Having a lot of fun and going to musical events. And eating!! The food here is so good and when surrounded by music and friends, we eat. Hot weather staves our appetites.

I am going to be making my breaks from writing a creative learning experience – I just invested in a new Canon Rebel t8i camera and am so ready to get out there and shoot to my heart’s content. I am horrible at landscapes and focus on people and things. When I traveled around the world in my 30’s, I was brave with my subjects. I need to get that brave back. Brave is good. I have pretty much nailed it for the rest of my life. Moving forward, changing into the person always wanted to be. Photography was really a part of me and I am looking forward to getting beyond my iPhone world.

Our departure is bittersweet. We are so ready to calm our itchy feet. COVID certainly changed our travel plans – delaying and delaying our planned trip 6 months trip to S.E. Asia. But here, our friendships are growing stronger, and we have made so many new friendships, it is sad to leave our lovely town.

The beautiful part is that instead of spending the last week of our vacations becoming tense with the thought of descending back into the fury of the USA, we now have a place that wraps us in an embrace and encourages to be our best person. Isn’t that brilliant!!

Of course, we will blog along our route. And we are going to attempt to do some videos. Starting small, and certainly no intent to become “influencers.” We just want to play and share. Glenn got a gimbal. I got to film him with that!!

It will be nice to become travelers again. And lovely that we can do so in our “backyard.”

Mexico’s brilliance is about to become ours.

We can’t wait to get out there.

If anyone has suggestions of places to eat, or things to do, at any of our destinations, please leave a comment below so we can check them out.

Next post – on the beach on Isla Holbox.

Stay tuned, and Happy New Year to you all.
